The movie, “Dead Poet’s Society” is set in puritanical New England during the late 1950s. The story revolves primarily around a group of young men, it is an all-boys school, and a liberal minded English teacher. These are young men whose parents want them to follow in their footsteps to become successful doctors or lawyers. Parents who use pressure and threats of one form or another to dissuade their sons from doing anything that doesn’t serve the parents vision for them.
The school is administered by strict, strait-laced, authoritarian teachers whose focus is more on maintaining the academy’s four pillars than on providing for opportunities for social, artistic or spirituals growth for the students.
Then they are introduced to Mr. Keating, their English teacher, who had also attended the academy. He introduces them to the idea that each of them has the potential to become powerful individuals and that they, and they alone, are responsible for their futures. Throughout the movie Mr. Keating strives to convince the boys to think for themselves, look at things from different perspectives, to break the bonds of “common hour thinking”.
Of course, there are those who do not agree with Mr. Keating’s unorthodox and non-conformist approaches, mostly the other teachers, some of the student’s parents and a few students as well. Mr. Keating pays them no mind continuing his attempts to turn his students into “free thinkers”.
