If you are 70 years old or older, I have a question for you. Do you believe that life is done with you because you’ve made a certain number of trips around the sun?
If your answer was yes, WHY?
I reached what I considered to be a significant milestone on July 25th, my 75th birthday. Now when I was much younger, I used to think people who had retired were “old,” and people who were in their 70’s were “very old!
What I’ve come to believe is that you are only old if you choose to be. That’s right, you do not have to “get old” if you choose not to.
“What, has he discovered the fountain of youth, or some secret formula that stops the aging process?” Yes and no. What I’ve discovered is that by eating a healthy diet, having a strong spiritual foundation and practice, having strong and meaningful relationships, and maintaining a growth or positive mindset, you can slow the effects of aging.
I’ll be totally honest – my earth suit is showing the normal wears and tears of its 75 years, but my mind and spirit are not. I have a routine of working out twice a week with a personal trainer to help me maintain muscle, core stability, and balance. I attend church services pretty much weekly, albeit virtually most of the time right now. I continue to grow and apply my understanding of the principles of transformational growth. And, I practice being grateful for all that has happened, is happening and will happen in my life. I have an amazing and loving wife to whom I’ve been married to for four and a half years. I was blessed to have her come into my life when she did.
Look, I busted the paradigm that being 70+ meant you are old. You can too. If you’re reading this, it means you’re still breathing which is an indication that the Universe, Spirit, God, whatever term you use to describe your higher authority, is not done with you yet. It means you still have a purpose, a reason for being totally present, sound in body, mind, and spirit. My reason – my purpose as I enter the legacy phase of my life is to help others learn to identify and lean into what gives them joy, what makes them want to greet each new day with gratitude, anticipation, and enthusiasm.
