Jack Canfield, motivational speaker, corporate trainer, entrepreneur, and co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, told a true story about a boy who used his imagination to create a dream. It goes something like this.

Monty Roberts was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would train horses, traveling from one location to another. Because of all the traveling, there was very little continuity in Monty’s high school career. As a senior, Monty had to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do as an adult.

Monty poured his heart into the project and wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He told his dream in detail. He even included a drawing of a two-hundred-acre horse ranch, including the location of all the buildings, stables, and a training track. Included was the floorplan for a four thousand square foot house.

Two days after turning the paper in, he received it back with a large, red F and a note that read “See me after class” on the front page. Monty went to see the teacher and asked why he had received an F. The teacher replied that Monty’s dream was unrealistic for someone like him, someone from an itinerant family without the resources to acquire land, build the buildings, buy breeding stock, and pay stud fees. The teacher told Monty it would be impossible for him to achieve his dream, and if he rewrote his paper with a more realistic goal, the teacher would reconsider his grade.

Over the next week, Monty pondered what to do. He even asked his father for advice. His father told him he thought it was a critical decision and that Monty would have to decide. Monty turned in the same paper the next day and said to the teacher, “You can keep your F; I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty ended up building that four thousand square foot house on his two-hundred-acre horse ranch, and he framed and hung his school paper over the fireplace.

Monty’s former teacher eventually visited the ranch and, before leaving, admitted being something of a dream stealer, stealing many children’s dreams over the years. Fortunately, Monty fought to hang on to his.
