It’s early spring here in South Carolina and I am anxiously looking over my flower beds and pots planning what’s next. It’s time to clear out the weeds and dead plants from last fall and see what the nurseries are offering for early planting.
That got me to thinking about more than gardens. Spring is a perfect time to take stock of what no longer serves us (as in the weeds that have accumulated in our minds) and to look at what’s next that will propel us to the life we truly would love living.
Weeds of Thoughts
Still in a pandemic, staying close to home, we have primarily been talking with the same people over and over, not shopping, not going out to eat, and certainly not going to the movies. It has been a long winter of staying put and thinking about the same old thing day after day. So, it’s naturally time to do a little spring clearing. I’m not recommending that you forsake wearing masks and congregating in large groups, but I am saying—get out and walk, make a point of speaking to your neighbors, get on a few zoom calls, allow your minds to be stimulated with new thoughts and new ideas. Clear out the cobwebs of doubts, fears, and boredom.
Make Space for Something New
Just like planning for spring planting, we can plan for the planting of new ideas, new awareness, and new beautiful thoughts. As we let go of sadness, boredom, lethargy, doubts and fears—we embrace beauty, joy, happiness in our conversations, in the books we read, and in watching movies that actually inspire us to our own greatness. We open to guidance—spiritual guidance and guidance from a mentor or coach. The thing about making space for something new is that without someone holding us accountable—we soon fall back into old patterns of behavior.
