Less stuff, less on our plates, less indulgence, less essential oils we use at one time – that is usually what less is more refers to. But let’s take a look at that concept. We live in a world of plenty while half the world lives in want. Most of us have grown up with the thought that the more you have, the more happiness you will obtain. If one thing is good, ten things must be better, right?

I think you can begin to see through this fallacy. More is not always good for us. Now let’s turn that thought to the use of pure essential oils. We have learned that these oils from nature are very potent and if we aren’t careful, they can cause rashes or what may even appear to be as an allergic response. (A topic for a future blog will be on whether you can actually be “allergic” to a properly distilled essential oil.) Spoiler alert, you cannot but I will explain that at another time.

However, does our body really need ten drops when one drop is sufficient? The answer to that is a resounding NO! If you went to the doctor and he prescribed a certain medication, you wouldn’t go home and say to yourself, “hey, if one pill is good which is what the doctor prescribed, I bet if I take 10 pills instead I would get better faster!” Just as you wouldn’t do that because it is ridiculous, we shouldn’t use more than what is recommended when it comes to the use of essential oils. It boils down to chemistry. Some essential oils are very high in phenols, aldehydes, and ketones – all of which can cause skin reactions and with repeated use, can cause accumulation of toxic buildup in the liver or kidneys. Other oils like the citrus oils are phototoxic and applying too much and then exposing the skin to sunlight can result in redness, even blistering.

Here is a rule of thumb you can go by when using essential oils, especially when you are trying new oils.

Diffusion – no problem

Skin Application – dilute 1:1 with a good vegetable oil especially when using a new oil for the first time.

OR – apply any new oil undiluted to the soles of your feet

Always err on the side of caution and remember, no matter what others tell you—essential oils are extremely potent. Treat them with the upmost respect they deserve. These highly concentrated “medicines of the earth” are used medicinally and therapeutically, therefore, all due caution should be exercised in using them. What’s needed is a healthy dose of COMMON SENSE!
